The vegetable and flower sellers from Sanquelim market have expressed displeasure over the new temporary place allotted to them even as the SMC has claimed they will be soon shifted to new premises.

It may be stated that the Sanquelim Municipal council has taken up the construction of around 44 shops in the market complex and so the vendors who were sitting in the premises were shifted to a nearby shed. But most of the vendors feel dejected with the new place allotted to them and have demanded that proper place be given to them.

The SMC has shifted about 12 flower sellers and other vendors to a shed which is build for worshiping Ganesh during chaturthi. This place being a low lying area most of the water from the market goes and gets accumulated near the shed and it becomes difficult for the flower vendors to carry out their business.

“All the water from the market gets accumulated here in the shed provided to us. As we do not have any raised portion to sit, it becomes difficult for us to carry out the business. If it rains we cannot sit and even our flowers get damaged” Pandhari Ghadi who carries out the business in Sanquelim for over 30 years.

“SMC has promised us that they would give us a new shed, so let us see when they build the shade, till then we will have to face these problems” Ghadi claims demanding that they be given proper place.

Anandi Fondekar another vendor has the same problem and demands that SMC should construct the shed as early as possible. “We are sitting in a shed where they celebrate Ganesh festival besides this the shed is used by many as parking place. There is also no customers who come here so we hope that SMC looks into our problems and gives us a permanent solution” Fondekar told.

When contacted the SMC Chairman, Dharmesh Saglani claimed that presently they have taken up the work of renovation and building of new shops in the market complex so some of the vendors have been shifted to the nearby shed.

“There are about 44 shops which we are constructing in the market complex and the shopkeepers from near the Sanquelim fort will be shifted there. As far as the flower sellers and other vendors are concerned we have decided to build a special shed for them so that they could do the business” Saglani told.
