Olive Ridley turtle lays 113 eggs at Patnem beach

CANACONA: Olive Ridley turtle also known as Pacific Ridley sea turtle, primarily found in Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans came calling at Patnem beach on Wednesday, weighing about 60 kgs and laid 113 eggs.

CANACONA: Olive Ridley turtle also known as Pacific Ridley sea turtle, primarily found in Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans came calling at Patnem beach on Wednesday, weighing about 60 kgs and laid   113 eggs.

The Olive Ridley turtle was first spotted at the Patnem beach by a tourist Bane Vukojevic of Serbia, who organised the rescue and collection of the eggs with the help of wild life personnel. 

Incidentally, this is the first time this year an Olive Ridley has come to lay eggs at Patnem beach. 

Ulhas Pagi of the turtle conservation centre Galgibag, retrieved a total of 113 eggs which will be kept in the nursery at Galgibag and once hatched after 55 days, will be released into the sea, said RFO Vikram A Gaonkar.

According to the Wildlife Department, the total number of Olive Ridley turtles arrived at Agonda beach this year which is in process of acquisition for the conservation of turtles is 27, which laid 2838 eggs and at Galgibag 7 turtles visited laying 579 eggs. All the eggs after keeping at the nurseries at the respective places, are released into the sea, when hatched. Till now a total of 467 healthy hatchlings have been released into the sea, Gaonkar said.
