MARGAO: Former minister Ramesh Tawadkar along with BJP ST Morcha President Prabhakar Gaonkar thanked the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for saving Goan villages from Eco Sensitive zones. Out of 96 villages, 69 villages have been removed from the list of ESZ.

Speaking at a press conference Tawadkar informed that 4156 villages were classified in the Eco Sensitive zones in the state of Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. While in Goa, 96 villages from Sattari Dharbandora, Sanguem and Canacona talukas were classified into ESZ.

It may be recalled that the Centre had passed a law in 1986 and formulated an Environment Protection Act and a committee was established under the chairmanship of Kasturirangan. After a report was made by the committed in 2012, 99 villages of Goa were put in the list of Eco sensitive zones.

Ramesh Tawadkar said that Goa is a small state with its limited land available for agriculture and for development. "All had placed their views and we had given memorandum that the village development will be hampered and no commercial and industrial activities can happen if the villages are classified in Eco sensitive zones" Tawadkar said.

"Sattari 43 villages have been removed, Sanguem 23 and Canacona 3 villages have been removed” he informed.
