Ponda Police arrest 5 locals with firearms in raids

PONDA: Ponda Police on Tuesday arrested five persons for illegally possessing five country made firearms and seven cartridges, 11 buds, 24 pipes and several other parts of firearms and hunting instruments worth Rs one lakh. 

According to the police, a team led by Ponda Deputy Superintendent of Police Nelson Albuquerque based on the information provided by the locals conducted raids at various places of Shiroda and Borim and arrested the five alleged accused for illegally possessing five country made firearms besides seven cartridges, 11 buds, 24 pipes and several other parts of firearms and hunting instrument worth Rs one lakh. The arms were used for hunting purpose.

The alleged accused arrested are Poly Fernandis, aged 52, resident of Adiamoll, Shiroda; Vasudev Gaonkar (40), resident of Chikan Gal, Shiroda; Vishwas Velip (53),  resident of Paz, Shiroda; Vinod Shirodkar (55), resident of Shiroda; Niraj Chari (41), resident of Top Cola, Borim. Five separate offences have been registered against them under Section 3 and 25 of Arms Act. Out of five arrested, two alleged accused are remanded in police custody while three are released on bail.

Niraj Chari was making parts of the firearms and Poly Fernandes circulated the arms to other alleged accused.
