Positivity rate drops to 30%,  but new cases remain consistent

PANJIM: The daily COVID-19 positivity rate dropped to 30 per cent on Tuesday – the lowest this month – even as 1,549 new patients were detected in a 24-hour period. 

The State’s COVID positivity rate that had touched 51 per cent on May 10 is slowly dropping. On May 1, the daily positivity rate was at 39 per cent.

The daily positivity rate – considered the highest in the country until a week back – dropped to 31 per cent on May 19. Thereafter it continued to vary between 32 and 36 per cent. On Monday too, the positivity rate had crossed the 35 per cent mark with 1,401 new cases.

The positivity rate had remained below 20 per cent till April 17 and it picked up thereafter with a sudden surge in daily cases. April had reported over 30,000 cases. On the other hand, from May 1 till May 25, a total of 58,357 cases have been reported. 

As per the bulletin issued by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), of the 5044 samples tested, 1,549 were detected with COVID, taking the total coronavirus caseload to 1,49,410.

The recoveries continued to be on higher side with 2,082 patients recovering. As on date, 87.84 per cent of the total patients have recovered, that is 1,31,244. As such, the total active case tally further dropped and stood at 15,706.

Margao continued to remain the major hotspot with 1,480 active cases as on Tuesday followed by Chimbel with 870 patients and Panjim with 849 cases. Candolim too saw 800 active cases. 

On Tuesday, 39 more patients succumbed to the infection taking the total death toll to 2,460. Of these, 19 deaths were reported in Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), 11 in South Goa District Hospital and one each were brought dead at ESI Hospital Margao, Primary Health Centre Quepem and Colvale and Hospicio. 

Three deaths have reported in private hospital in South Goa, while two in North Goa private hospitals. 

DHS said that four of the deceased had received their first shot of the vaccine.
