MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, along with Goa Police organised a self-defense programme for girls on May 17 on the occasion of International Day for Women in Maritime. This comes after supporters of former Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao had criticised Viegas for keeping silent about a recent rape case that had occurred in Benaulim and had recalled how at the time when Churchill was the MLA, Viegas had criticised Churchill about a rape incident that had occurred in the constituency.

In an effort to empower girls, the programme organised by the MLA and Goa Police will be held at Maria hall, Benaulim from 4pm to 7pm.

"The aim of the programme is to make young girls self-reliant in self-defense. Through this programme the girls will be trained in various techniques and combat skills to defend themselves in case of an attack,” said Viegas, while speaking about the programme.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA added that there is a strong need for self-defence programmes in view of the fact that crimes against women continue unabated in Goa and following the numerous cases of sexual assault and rapes reported in the media recently.

"Several laws have been passed, programmes have been developed, and funds have been spent to combat harassment and atrocities against women. These, however, do not help to reduce the crime rate against women. The rogue elements could be taught a lesson if women are trained in self-defence,” Viegas added.
