Suspicious ‘affair angle’ led to attempted murder

PANJIM: In a relationship gone sour, the Mapusa police are on the lookout for a man who nearly killed his room-mate on suspicion of being in a relationship with his mother.

Suraj Chandan from Odisha is charged with attempted murder after he tried to kill 30-year-old Manoj Bag while all in the house were asleep in the wee hours of Sunday. The incident occurred at Verla, in the jurisdiction of Mapusa Police Station, when the accused reportedly used garden tools to attack Manoj.

While the investigation team has refuted ‘affair angle’ or previous enmity between the victim and the accused, sources said the attack could be a result of what the woman’s children understood about the relationship.

“Suraj is one of the four siblings allegedly neglected by their mother. Their father died four years ago after which the woman left her children to fend for themselves. Suraj’s sister was the only one to know where their mother lived in Goa. She travelled to her native for a wedding and on return to Goa, she came along with her brother Suraj,” said a Mapusa police official.

Suraj shared the rented room with his mother and Manoj but soon realised the latter two were in an alleged relationship. This provoked him to attack Manoj, sources said even as Suraj’s arrest is crucial for the investigation.

With few leads based on the initial probe, a police team is sent out of Goa to locate the attacker’s whereabouts and arrest him. The police are also looking for the weapon/s used for the attack. An FIR under Section 307 (attempted murder) IPC is already registered against him.
