PERNEM: In a brutal assault reported at Vaddy-Siolim, two tourists from Bengaluru were mercilessly beaten up in a parking lot after their car accidentally dashed against a parked two-wheeler.

The victims have been identified as Shailesh Jha (32) and Mohammed Saheed Farooq Ahmed, both natives of Bengaluru.

The incident occurred on Sunday at around 3.15 pm at a parking lot of a restaurant at Vaddy-Siolim when the car driven by Jha slightly dashed against a parked two-wheeler.

On witnessing this, the two-wheeler owner Pravin Prakash Pathrud of Agarwado, Pernem snatched the key of the complainant’s car and further along with one Jaleel Ahmed and others with their common intention to kill them, brutally assaulted the complainant and his friend Farooq Ahmed with slaps, fist blows, kicks and wooden club on their vital body parts causing them multiple injuries.

Further, the accused Pathrud allegedly extorted Rs 5,000 from the complainant through online transactions and threatened to kill them.

Both the tourists immediately rushed to the Siolim outpost where the police dilly-dallied in registering the complaint. The injured tourists had a harrowing time at the outpost where they were kept waiting for hours.

It was only after the incident went viral on social media the police took cognisance of the complaint and arrested both the accused Pravin Pathrud and Jaleel Ahmed, who are employed as security bouncers in the parking lot.

DySP Dalvi informed that the police will write for cancellation of the licence of the security agency. The police said that a detailed report would be sent to higher-ups for delaying in registering a complaint. Action is likely to be initiated against the staff of the Siolim outpost for delaying in registering the complaint.

A case has been registered against both the accused under Sections 323, 324, 307, 384 and 506 (ii) read with 34 IPC.

Further investigation is in progress under the guidance of Anjuna PI Prashal Dessai and supervision of SDPO Jivba Dalvi and SP North Nidhin Valsan, IPS.

When contacted Anjuna PI Dessai said that both the victims were referred to the District Hospital, Mapusa where it was found that one of the victims’ ear was ruptured and will now be taken to GMC for a CT scan and for further treatment.

This brazen attack on tourists in the parking lot of a restaurant has exposed the hollowness of how the security of guests visiting the State is at stake. Police have been found acting only after such incidents go viral on social media.
