A boat capsized in River Jhelum in Jammu and Kashmir claiming the lives of four people, and leaving three injured on Tuesday morning at Muzaffar Zargar. Several are feared to be missing and rescue operations are underway.

As per the medical superintendent of Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, three people were rescued and hospitalized. Several other victims are still missing. It is not yet clear how many people were travelling on the boat. However, locals said that there were several school children onboard the boat.

On Monday evening, the Srinagar Meteorological Centre had predicted light to moderate rain and light snow over higher reaches, along with thunder at most places in the Kashmir Division. The incident took place as the flow of the river was very high owing to the incessant rains over the last couple of days.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is carrying out a rescue operation. As per reports, Senior officials from police and civil administration, including Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, and Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, reached the incident spot to monitor the rescue operations. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic incident. According to the governor, constant monitoring of the situation is being conducted and the administration is providing all possible help to the bereaved families.
