Fontainhas Residents Decry Disruptions Caused by Domestic Tourists, Urge Government Intervention

On Thursday, domestic tourists were witnessed blocking roads and disrupting traffic flow in the picturesque Fontainhas area, much to the dismay of local residents. Despite the presence of warning signs outlining 'Do's and Don'ts' in the vicinity, the tourists' behavior continues to pose a significant problem for the community.

Residents of Fontainhas have persistently raised concerns over the issue of domestic tourists obstructing roads, yet their pleas seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Despite numerous complaints to official authorities, no concrete solution has been forthcoming, leaving residents frustrated and inconvenienced.

The situation echoes a similar incident from October 30th, 2023, when the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) imposed a ban on commercial shoots in heritage areas such as Sao Tome and Fontainhas. However, the influx of tourists, photographers, and social media influencers remains unchecked, leading to noise pollution and disturbances for local residents, particularly senior citizens.

While commercial shoots were regulated, domestic tourists were exempted from restrictions, as their photography activities were deemed personal rather than commercial. However, with the recent surge in tourist numbers at Fontainhas, residents find themselves grappling with the same disruptions once again.

It can be recalled that a heated altercation in December 2023, sparked by tourists engaging in photography within the residential area. The resident, anxious by the intrusion on privacy, resorted to splashing water on the tourists, emphasizing that Fontainhas is not a backdrop for professional photography but a cherished heritage space.

Residents had highlighted the persistent challenges they face, including noise pollution and invasion of privacy, urging the government to intervene and implement clear guidelines for tourists. They had emphasized the need to strike a balance between accommodating visitors' interests and preserving the sanctity of Fontainhas' heritage spaces.

Despite filing multiple complaints, residents feel ignored and call upon the government to take swift and stringent action to address the ongoing disruptions caused by domestic tourists. As Fontainhas continues to grapple with these challenges, residents remain hopeful for a resolution that respects both their heritage and their quality of life.
