Marcus treble helps Sporting win; Dempo salvage point

NAVELIM: A fine hat-trick from Marcus Mascarenhas enabled Sporting Clube de Goa to a convincing 5-0 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club in the Goa Professional League at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Friday.

Marcus scored in the 26’, 45+1 and 77th minute while Stendly Fernandes (71’) and Philip (55’) scored a goal each for Flaming Oranje. Marcus now leads the goal- scoring table with 12 goals.

Sporting took the lead through Marcus, who scored his 10th goal of the campaign. He pushed in with a sliding effort to guide in a Girish Naik corner-kick.

Later, Sporting Clube had the chance to double the tally when Girish Naik and George played a short corner before the latter lashing in a perfect delivery only to see it headed wide by Dattaraj.

Later a good combination play by Sporting Clube’s Stendly and Dattaraj saw the Flaming Oranje break the Guardian Angel defence and later Stendly squared the ball in the box to Marcus, who lost his balance and his feeble attempt was saved by the keeper.

Sporting Clube had series of chances and finally they inflated their tally when Guardian Angel player played a miss pass to Sporting Clube’s Girish Naik who then squeezed in a defence splitting pass to Marcus and this time the striker placed in the bottom right corner to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Sporting soon scored their third when Stendly played a long ball in the box which was flicked by Marcus to Philip and the foreigner, who came in as a second half substitute tapped the ball from close to score the team’s third goal.

Guardian Angel enjoyed a better ball possession in the second session coming close to scoring with Yakubu and Bamba Musah  having attempts at goal. But it didn’t create much danger.

At the other end, Sporting Clube De Goa further inflated the lead through Stendly Fernandes who on receiving a pass from Philip entered the box and the youngster pulled the trigger giving no chance for the rival keeper to make it 4-0.

Minutes later, Marcus completed his treble with a clean finish after being fed by Girish Naik.

Meanwhile in another match at Ella ground, Dempo SC scored an injury time equalising goal to deny FC Goa a win after the match ended 1-1 draw.

FC Goa had take the lead in the 72nd minute, when Nestor found Opi, and he made no mistake, finding the back of the net and making it 1-0.

A cross from the left hand side wasn’t dealt with by the Gaurs’ defence, and Yogesh fired the ball into the net, making it 1-1.
