Suman, Vaishanavi and Shrisha win gold

PORVORIM: Goa dominated the ring in the women's final of the elite men and women boxing championship organised by the Goa Amateur Boxing Association at Salvador Do Mundo Sports Complex, on Saturday. 

Khelo India trainee Suman Yadav from Margao won unanimously packing punches in her opponent Sivani Sandhu from Daman and Diu in the 57kgs. Despite receiving counts in the first round itself, the boxer from Daman and Diu did not give up. Yadav also took home the best boxer trophy.

International boxer, Vaishanavi Prabhu has made a brilliant comeback after almost two years and she's in top form.  With attacking punches she outclassed Sheilja Singh from Gujarat in the 60 kgs weight category.

Priti Chawan lost on split decision 4:1 to Maharashtra's Gayatri Patil in the 52 kgs weight category.

National Bronze medalist Shrisha Jampula won against Gujarat's Param jeetkaur Rathod in a close and well fought bout in the 66kgs weight category.

Maharashtra took home the team championship in the men's category. The three boxers from Goa in the finals, in the 51kg weight category Amit Kumar (MAH) won the bout against Goa's Samir Kenchikera. In 60kgs Baburam Bishwakarma went down to Rohit (MAH).

"This tournament would not be possible without the assurance of hemo from Sports Minister Govind Gaude, and the several people and companies that came forward to support us. We've realised we need more exposure and that will help in the National Games," said Danuska Da Gama. There are plans to host exposure training cum competition to prepare the team for the 37th National Games to be hosted in Goa.
