It’s unbelievable but true. The BJP is no different from the Congress when it comes to overthrowing opposition governments. After coming to power at the Centre under PM, Narendra Modi the party has destabilized Congress governments in Arunachal Pradesh and lately Uttarkhand and encouraged defections in the ruling Congress Party in the biggest North-Eastern state of Assam.
However, it’s design was foiled by Assam CM, Tarun Gogoi. Then it set its eyes on Uttarkhand and sent it’s troubleshooters to encourage disgruntled Congress MLAs to defect and team up with the BJP to form a new govt. The rebels fell for the bait.
However, the BJP could not form the government immediately as the sword of disqualification of the nine rebel Congress MLAs was hanging over their heads. So the BJP government resorted to imposition of President’s rule in that hapless state. BJP has made a mockery of constitutional norms and proprieties.
It also proves that it is no better than the Congress when it comes to misusing the office of the President for its own partisan ends. The Congress had used the office of the President of India as a rubber stamp to suit it’s selfish ends. The BJP has done one better. Destabilising an elected government in Uttarkhand and before that in Arunachal Pradesh for its selfish partisan ends, the BJP has shown that it’s a bird of the same feather. That PM Modi chaired a meet of the Union cabinet to get its approval for president’s rule shows that his pronouncements about respecting opposition governments are hollow. The state government was not given an opportunity to prove its majority on the floor of the house on 28 March as directed by the Governor.
With assembly elections due in April and May in four important states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam, the people have seen the true colours of the BJP. The voters should give a resounding slap on the face of the Modi government and his party by rejecting it outright at the coming polls to register their sore displeasure at what has happened in Arunachal and Uttarkhand.
It appears that the BJP has resorted to such dirty tricks after its humiliating defeats in Delhi and Bihar last year. It has lost confidence in winning elections and wants to win power in states at any cost, by fair means or foul. For it, the lust for power justifies the means. What a shame!
