Having grown in an environment full of life and love; among the crown of creation; the beautiful sea, the rivulets, spring, hills and mountains these resources has have had tremendous influence on my life… water, hills, mountains, rocks, sand and sea all around was life that rejuvenated and infused enthusiasm and zest for living – come summer, come winter and the rains! These thoughts run deep as life cries out water, water, water…!!!
Water, is the most needed element for living on earth but unfortunately we have forgotten this fact and continuously consuming it without thinking of the future. All the living organisms require water for growth and nourishment like to grow plants water is required, every bird or animal quench their thirst with water and the biggest one is the whole humankind in various prospects like drinking, cleaning, washing, agriculture, manufacturing and many more.
In our own homes do we promote the water saving techniques? What and how do the mothers teach the toddlers, her grownups! while brushing the teeth in the wash basin – the tap is on… while washing hands – the soap is applied the water keeps flowing out… washing of utensils…it pains!
Survival on earth totally depends on the fresh and pure water. A human body requires 2 to 3 litres (half to one gallon) of water for drinking purpose and 150 to 200 litres water is used for household activities in a day. Most of the fresh water is used in washing, cleaning and flushing toilet daily at home. Apart from conserving water from drinking or cooking purpose we need to modify the way of using water for other household activities in order to save it for future.
About 71% area of earth is covered by water which is also referred as Hydrosphere of earth, in which 96.5% water is found in seas or oceans which are salted water and not useful for anyone. Also 1.7% is in ground water, 1.7% in glaciers and 0.001% in the air in form of vapour or clouds. 2.5% of total water on earth is fresh water in which 98.8% is ice and ground water; thus, only around 1% is found as potable water. By seeing this calculation we can imagine that how much water is available which is useful for us. And yet we are contaminating the existing water resources with sewage, toxic chemicals and other wastes. Today to save life we need to save water, for life without water is not possible.
There are different methods to deal with water scarcity. Rain water harvesting is the best and most suitable method. We can also promote water conservation through media and by conducting public awareness programmes. By practising these simple steps we can conserve water and ensure the availability of water to future generations. So start saving each and every drop of water. Let our motto be “Save water, save life, save the world”. Let us save us from ‘wars’ on this precious resource!
Though there was plenty of water running in our rivulets, spring, we collected rain water to wash utensils and for other house hold activities. Why not toda
