Agarwada Dhonds begin fasting and penance ahead of Lairai Devi’s zatra

Spend time in abstinence, fast and prayer; prepare to take part in Homkund ritual

PERNEM: The devotees of Shirgao’s Goddess Lairai go through a lot of fasting and penance ahead of the zatra and the faithful Dhonds from Agarwada, Pernem, too have been preparing themselves to take part in the Homkund ritual. They prepare themselves five days ahead of the utsav, which will begin on Monday, April 24.

Aspiring Dhonds here stay away from home and restrict themselves to a strict vegetarian diet and commit themselves to a celibate life filled with five days of prayer, abstinence and meditation ahead of the zatra.

The major attraction of this utsav is the devout and faithful dhonds walk over the bed of red hot embers once the Homkund is lit.

The Dhonds from Agarwada Pernem have been devoutly following this tradition for many decades.
