PANJIM: The Captain of Ports (CoP) has directed all barge and canoe owners, water sports and cruise boat operators and others to undertake measures during the coming monsoons to prevent the occurrence of vector borne diseases.
The CoP in a circular issued has informed that the incidents of vector borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya usually are on rise during the monsoon due the increase in mosquito breeding habitats subsequent to the rain water collection.
The circular states that the owners/masters of the barges should ensure that no rainwater is accumulated in the cargo hold of the barges. The water so collected should be drained out regularly from the barges.
The owners/masters of the barges and other inland vessels should ensure that there is no stagnation of water in tyres used as fenders; the simplest tray could be drilling a hole at the bottom of the tyres so that the water from the tyres is drained out.
The owners of the other small vessels/crafts/ canoes/water sports boats are directed to ensure that their vessels are covered with tarpaulin during monsoon or to keep their vessels/boats upside down when not in use, so that no rainwater is accumulated in the vessel.
The operators cum owners have to also ensure that the labourers engaged to work on the trawlers/vessels or at the jetties are screened for malaria and obtain health cards for them from the Directorate of Health Services.
