A calf was fatally knocked down by a speeding vehicle in the wee hours on dawn on Friday, December 6 at Querem-Siolim. The vehicle involved in the mishap sped away leaving the poor calf to bleed and die by the road-side. The carcass was lying by the roadside and was really heart wrenching.
Besides there are several stray cows limping around in the vicinity after being knocked by reckless drivers almost every day. There have been incidents in which motorists, especially two-wheeler riders who sustain injuries after crashing into stray cattle. Even though the village panchayat has really taken great pains to impound stray cattle and send them to the gaushala at Mayem, still there are many bovines that move around in the village, feast on garbage and plastic and squat in the middle of the road at nights and often get killed.
It would be prudent if the panchayat does the needful again and relocate the animals at the cow shelter where they will be safe and sound. Traffic has increased hundred fold on the road and party hoppers in high spirits end up driving recklessly on the road at nights putting the lives of animals and humans at risk.
