Caranzalem Garden Gets Rs 2 Crore Facelift, But Nearby Lane Remains in Disrepair

The Caranzalem garden would be renovated at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore and it includes public facilities, CCTV cameras and play equipment. This is perhaps the second or third time that the garden is being renovated, while a few metres ahead the lane leading up to Fern Residency Hotel is in a pathetic state. This busy lane, which connects Caranzalem to Taleigao and Dona Paula, has been in horrible condition for more than a decade.

Before Covid-19, pavers were laid for a short distance but due to frequent digging for sewerage, gas and utilities pipelines, the lane is in a mess. A couple of times band-aid treatments were carried out and a few pot-holes with laterite were coated with a veneer of cement. The cement got eroded, exposing the rocks and making driving and riding bumpy and dangerous.

The lane was featured in O Heraldo and Herald TV. This is about a 100m long ‘orphan’ lane supposedly partly under the Taleigao Panchayat and partly under the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP). The Monserratte family that stays a kilometre away, and includes a cabinet minister (Atanasio/Babush), an MLA (Jennifer) and CCP Mayor (Rohit). They also have a strong say in the panchayat. It would be appreciable if the lane is repaired, tarred and gifted by them to the public within the first week of 2025.
