At the Adpai and Durbhat jetties in Ponda taluka, streetlight fixtures are found to be non-functional. At Adpai jetty, the area remains in total darkness during the night.
Such a situation has been existing for a quite long. Hence commuters, especially young girls and women walking their way from the jetty towards main road face great inconvenience and trouble. They are likely to be attacked by miscreants, thereby raising the possibility of robbing them of their valuables like gold ornaments and even cash.
At the Durbhat jetty too, almost three fixtures have been out of order for last almost a month. Hence commuters returning from Rassaim towards this jetty face great inconvenience and trouble. As on Wednesday December 10 at 7:30 pm, situation at both these jetties was found to be unchanged.
It is pity that neither the linesmen of the Electricity Department nor the elected representatives of the village panchayat of Durbhat have been able to come to the rescue of innocent travellers by assuring timely repairs of the non-working fixtures. It is a fact that the acting sarpanch has been found overlooking the basic problems at this jurisdiction for reasons best known to him. The Directorate of Panchayats as a competent authority does not depute its representatives to villages to get acquainted with the prevailing situation in different fields.
I sincerely request the acting sarpanch of this panchayat to initiate immediate action in repairing the non-working fixtures before the situation turns from bad to worse. No doubt, welfare of the masses must be assured at all costs.
