PANJIM: A day after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced an inquiry into the alleged molestation of a Russian tourist by a Goa Medical College doctor, North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan recorded evidence of the Russian Consulate lawyer Vikram Varma, the Russian interpreter –an eyewitness in this case, GMC doctors and Calangute police on Saturday. Sources indicate the inquiry report is likely to be completed next week.
“The government is expected to receive the report next week. Crucial witnesses including the Russian interpreter who confirmed the victim was molested by the male doctor have testified before the collector,” sources said.
The 32-year-old Russian tourist, a first time visitor to Goa was initially molested and robbed by an unidentified culprit at Baga beach on October 16. She has then alleged that she was subsequently molested by a male GMC doctor, where she was taken for medical test by the Calangute police.
The victim had stated there were two woman doctors present in the examination hall but they were not allowed to carry out the examination on her. The male doctor, she recalled, pressed her breasts on the pretext of examining her and insisted on a ‘genital test’, which she refused.
The Russian consulate in Mumbai has been examining the matter on a daily basis soon after being informed about the shocking crime. Parrikar had called for an inquiry by the collector to ascertain the truth while he assured that the doctor will face the heat if charges are proven against him.
The Goa Medical Council has also taken suo moto cognizance of the incident and sought for an inquiry report from the state government.
