The Delhi High Court on Thursday observed that actor Rajpal Yadav was sent to jail in a Rs 9 crore debt case after repeatedly failing to honour his commitments to clear outstanding dues. The remarks came while the court heard Yadav’s bail application, filed on the grounds of attending a wedding in his family.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma told the actor, “You have gone to jail because you didn’t honour your own commitment,” noting that he had been given more than two dozen opportunities to resolve the matter. The court also pointed out that Yadav’s counsel had made conflicting assurances before the Bench.

Earlier, Yadav’s lawyer had stated that the pending amount would be paid directly to the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, and the actor had affirmed this. However, during Thursday’s hearing, the counsel submitted that the money would instead be deposited with the court. Justice Sharma asked the defence to clarify its stand, and the matter was scheduled for further hearing later in the day.
Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5 after the High Court rejected his plea for additional time in the long-running cheque bounce and loan default case. The court ordered him to serve a six-month sentence, citing repeated violations of its directions.
The case relates to unpaid dues that grew to around Rs 9 crore following the failure of his 2012 production Ata Pata Laapata. Meanwhile, Yadav’s wife Radha said several film industry colleagues, including Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, have offered financial support.
