VASCO: South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar on Wednesday urged the mining dependents not to believe the news reports that the Central government has declined to amendment the MMDR Act “until something reaches Goa” to that effect.
Meeting the launch, barge owners and other mining dependents from Mormugao, Sawaikar said that he was there for persuasion of their cause and not to give assurances of deadlines.
On the occasion, a barge owner told him, “I have sold all my assets in the form of barges to pay off my loans as I have no money to retain them now. Our condition is absolutely desperate and we don’t want any false hope from any leader of the State now.”
When asked what the government planned to do after reportedly declining to amendment of the MMDR Act, Sawaikar said, “This is a media report, but until something reaches the Goa Government saying that it has rejected it, I don’t want to believe it.”
Meanwhile, Sawaikar reassured the dependents, but without giving a deadline, that the government would explore all avenues to resume mining.
