CHORAO: The roof of a ferry was ripped away by strong winds, while property was also damaged in other parts of Chorao Island on Monday night.
Bicholim Fire Officer Achut Dhawaskar said the strong winds which struck Chorao Island on Monday night led to uprooting of many trees, property damage estimated at Rs 8 lakh and disruption in power supply.
Fire services teams worked overnight and managed to clear the uprooted trees only by 6.30 pm on Tuesday.
The ferry boat ‘Madgao’, which was plying along the Chorao-Ribandar route sustained some damage when a sheet of the roof was ripped apart and flew into the sky.
Power supply was disrupted to most parts of Chorao Island and efforts were on to restore power to the affected areas.
When contacted, Junior Engineer M Madakaikar said his workers were engaged in restoring power supply.
