MARGAO: Clarifying that his speech was purely related to the Konkani language and had nothing to do with wiping signs of the Portuguese regime, Jnanpith awardee Damodar Mauzo on Thursday pointed out how Konkani survived despite the ban on the use of the language during that era.
It is pertinent to note that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant at the inauguration of the new space allotted to Goa Konkani Akademi in Panjim had stated that Jnanpith awardee Damodar Mauzo had already spoken about how Konkani suffered injustice during the Portuguese regime, how strictures were imposed against it use.

“My speech was purely related to Konkani language and had nothing to do with what the Chief Minister had spoken about wiping out signs of the Portuguese regime. What I said was how Konkani language survived despite banning the use of Konkani,” said Mauzo.
He stated that he had pointed out how Goans, who left Goa during the inquisition had kept the language alive at their place.
