PANJIM: The ongoing construction activity along the highway opposite Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim caused a major traffic jam on Monday.
Vehicles, including ambulances were stuck for at least an hour along the stretch. Hospital visitors too were inconvenienced.

The vehicles were forced to move in a single lane as part of the highway was dug up. While vehicles normally move in two lanes before they approach this stretch, the delay and indiscipline on the part of commuters led to the forming of four lanes and later the vehicles were forced to commute in the single lane opposite the hospital.
The sheer volume of vehicles heading towards Panjim, especially during peak hours, threw the incoming traffic off gear.
The traffic police said they were doing their best to manage the situation. Questions were raised as to why there was no proper planning in place, given that hospital visitors, especially those facing emergencies, were inconvenienced. It was very difficult for ambulances to pass through.
A row of trucks from the company handling the construction work, further led to the congestion thereby narrowing the width for the other vehicles. With KTC buses forced to travel at a snail’s pace, the passengers reached their respective workplace and other destinations late.
