PORVORIM: Senior citizens and the handicapped continue to face problems while visiting the office of the Civil Registrar-cum-Sub Registrar in Mapusa, which is on the second floor of a private building behind the main Mapusa market, as the lift in the building is non-functional. Those who are in wheelchairs have to be carried to the office by hired labourers.
The issue has been highlighted by print and electronic media for many years and the people have demanded that the office be shifted to the ground floor more in the interest of the handicapped.
Additionally, the High Court had passed an order to provide the handicapped with easy access to reach all government offices. However, Civil Registrar’s office had not adhered to the order.
The owner of a restaurant in the building stated that the lift had not been working for the last 10 years. He added, “I have seen old people being lifted by labourers and carried to the office.”
