MARGAO: The gates of the New Market were opened for business on Monday after shop owners met the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Pooja Naik and complained that the two associations claiming control over the market failed to take them into confidence.

The shop owners said that the trade has to go on and the market cannot remain closed for so many days.
Siddhesh Raikar from the New Market said they don’t want the entire market to be shut because of the leaders of two associations.
“The entire market is open, but the associations are taking decisions without consulting all the shop owners,” said Prasad another owner.
“The persons claiming to be presidents, we have not seen for the last 15 years,” claimed Rafik Mohammed, another shop owner.
Chairperson Pooja has asked the shop owners to open the market on alternate days till Saturday.
“I will consult the District Collector and put forth the demand of the vendors to start regular operations of the market,” said Naik.
It may be recalled that the presidents of the two associations of the New Market had announced to keep the market closed during the three-day lockdown period and extended the same later. The vendors are against this idea and want the market to operate regularly.
