Although the government is certain that MCI will allow admissions to a total of 150 seats for the third consecutive year, the just-concluded first round of admission by the Directorate of Technical Education’s (DTE) accepted admissions for 100 seats. However, the second round of admission – set to begin from July 27-29 – will fill the balance 50 seats.
“The DTE filled 100 seats only, pending an official confirmation from the MCI to continue with 150 seats this year too. We are certain to get a notification before the second round of admissions begins. The GMC will have 150 first year MBBS students,” an official said seeking anonymity.
The Goa government has been orally informed about filling 150 seats but a written approval will be a relief, the GMC source added.
Until earlier this month, MCI had allowed only 100 seats after its inspection team found that the required infrastructure at GMA sought to be improved on eight parameters was not complete.
The main requirements were to have a lecture room, an auditorium for the students and three new classrooms to accommodate the batches with increased capacity that were under-construction when the team visited.
“They were worried the classrooms will not be ready in time for the new academic session but they have been assured that work will definitely be completed. It was only after the assurance that 150 seats were confirmed. We are now awaiting an official letter from MCI,” the source said.
GMC Dean Dr Pradeep Naik said he has not received official confirmation of the extension in the number of seats as yet and quickly added that classes will remain unaffected.
“Classes for the academic year 2015-16 will commence on September 1. Though we have not received official confirmation from the MCI, we are confident it will come. We don’t find the need to hold back any students or postpone classes,” he said.
