PANJIM: Merces residents protested against an illegal scrap yards in the residential areas and demanded that the authorities clamp down on all scrapyards here immediately.
Social activist Tanoj Adwalpalkar, said,” Everybody has a right to do business but that does not mean that it should disturb others. A record must be maintained of what is being brought in a scrap yard and how is it being stored.”

He pointed out that recently there was an incident of chlorine gas leakage from a cylinder stored at a scrap yard and asked what would happen if someone brings a bomb or a gun here.
Santa Cruz Block Congress President John Nazareth said, “Surprise checks should be conducted by authorities to ensure that unwanted things are not being brought at the scrapyards and if something is found, the scrapyard should be sealed. But nothing is happening. There is no control. Today the chlorine gas leakage incident has occurred here, tomorrow it will happen somewhere else,”
According to him, there are eight scrap yards in the jurisdiction of the Merces panchayat. The locals claimed that no action was taken against the owners who run illegal scrap yards.
The residents demanded that they be allowed to breathe fresh air. The protest was held in view of an incident of chlorine leakage reported at a scrapyard at Merces due to which around 18 people, including owner were affected and sent to GMC after they started feeling uneasiness.
