MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council carried out a drive against roadside encroachments in its jurisdiction and seized five truckloads of goods, signboards and other material.
The drive was carried near Ganeshpuri, Housing Board, Court junction, Bodgini temple and the famous Alankar theatre where a number of food stalls operate and transact business by blocking the street.
Truckloads of tables, chairs and other items were seized by the municipality.
Two teams have been formed consisting of one municipal inspector and ten workers.
Amitesh Shirvoikar Chief Officer (CO), said, “Many fruit and other vendors had encroached in the road widening area and some councillors had raised the issue during the council meeting and a resolution was latter passed to initiate action against the illegalities.
The CO stated that the municipality has put up public notices asking people to remove all encroachments but they refused to budge.
The drive will continue every day and violators will be penalised if they fail to fall in line, said the Chief Officer.
