People shouldn’t suffer because of potable water: South Goa MP

MARGAO: South Goa Member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha on Tuesday instructed officials of the water department to concentrate on providing quality drinking water to the people.

Sardinha along with South Goa District Collector Ruchika Katyal held a review meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee, DISHA at Margao, where officials of nearly 14 government departments attended the meeting and submitted the reports of works carried out through the departments under central government schemes. 

Speaking to the media, Sardinha said, “Instructions have been given to the officials of the Public Works Department, Water with regard to concentrate on providing quality drinking water to the people, and more especially to the people living in Canacona, as there is a high rate of kidney-related cases.” 

“There is an urgent need to improve the quality of the drinking water supplied by the government department. We have been hearing the news of micro-plastic in the drinking water, and hence needs to take extra precautions,” said Sardinha. 

Sardinha said, “We are ready to provide the machine to improve the quality of the drinking water. People should not suffer because of potable water.”

He said that funds of nearly Rs 8 crores are kept unutilized and are with the PWD with regard to the construction of roads under the Rural Development Agency. 

“I have asked the concerned officers to study the matter so that funds can be utilized,” said Sardinha. 

Sardinha has also instructed the concerned authorities to complete the underground power cabling in Rachol village panchayat which is held up due to the water-logging.
