PONDA: The Ponda Muncipal Council (PMC) decided to protect and preserve its Portuguese-era municipal building (CAMARA de Muncipal Ponda) as a heritage site.
PMC at its meeting on Friday also decided to construct a new administrative building for the existing municipality, adjacent to the existing heritage building at a cost around Rs 1.5 crore.

Chairperson Shantaram Kolvekar said the old building is small and the Goa Government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore on the occasion of the State’s sixty years of Liberation Day. “We decided to use it for the new administrative building construction. Hence, the new premises would be built with the Rs 1 crore government grants. Additional Rs 50 lakh sanctioned by the 14th Finance Commission will be used for construction of the new building adjacent to heritage building and the government has agreed for the same,” Kolvekar said.
It was also decided that fogging will be undertaken in all wards of PMC to prevent dengue.
It also decided to file police complaint against Revolutionary Goans (RG) members, who obstructed migrant vendors stating that they should not be allowed to conduct business in market.
“Police will be asked to maintain law and order if RG members come to the Ponda market on occasion of Diwali and create obstruction to vendors. We can’t differentiate between migrant and Goan vendors,” the chairperson said.
