The rain showers continued pouring in the state for more than a week with low lying areas of the capital city remaining inundated. There was no casualty reported even as the chaos on the road was a common feature for most of the time in the week.
Met department officials stated that the state has received 72 inches rainfall for the current monsoon season. Last three days received around 8 inch rainfall.
The tardy pre-monsoon work by the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) has been exposed frequently during the recent monsoon, which has caught the pace right from the day one.
The city roads in major parts including D B Bandodkar road, 18th June road and B B Borkar road remain partially under water when it starts pouring with drainages not being able to flush the rainwater out.
A slight lull in the showers brings back the life to normalcy.
CCP workers are seen troubleshooting for majority of the time as the rain continues lashing the city. The mud heaps piled alongside the road is cleared often by the CCP workers, who are seen working even in the dead end of the night.
CCP Mayor Caroline Po said that they have former a special night squads, which attend to the emergency calls and keep round the clock vigil.
“A group of eight workers form night squad and when there is no call, they usually lift the mud from the roadside,” she said.
During the day time too, workers are on the street ensuring that there is no flooding, Po added.
On Saturday, the Mayor instructed the workers to clear off the flooding near Hotel Neelam and opposite Mandovi riveira in the city.
She said that major water clogging is due to chocking of mouth of drainage.
