Sources said Chodankar worked with a builder and had to repay him a loan of Rs 2.40 lakh and another Rs 50,000 to an engineer.
“In December 2014, he (Chodankar) was sent with Rs 1.30 lakh to buy stamp papers but he returned empty handed. He later confessed to the builder of spending the cash elsewhere and promised to repay soon,” an officer said quoting a witness’ statement copy.
Six months later on June 2, 2015 the same builder handed over to him Rs 1.10 lakh only to lose it again. Chodankar had then gone missing. During this period, Chodankar also borrowed Rs 50,000 from an engineer identified as Sriram.
The deceased was also issued four notices from a bank for cheque bouncing, which he never responded to. Old Goa police are groping in the dark in whether to establish the case as murder as prima facie there were no external injuries and the autopsy report too gave the cause of death as asphyxia due to hanging.
