MARGAO: Members of the South Goa Advocates Association on Monday abstained from work as a mark of protest over what they called as the brazen, heinous and cold blooded murder of an advocate in the court campus at Allahabad by a police officer.
The Association has also resolved to write a letter to the government to direct its officers to refrain from carrying guns to the Courts and at public places where there is no apprehension of a law and order situation.
At the meeting held at the Bar room of the Civil and Criminal Courts, Margao, Adv Rajeev Gomes condemned the brutal killing of the lawyer.
He stated that the incident proves the total breakdown of law and order in the country and questioned that, if a lawyer can be killed by a policeman in Court premises, what will be the state of a common man at the hands of the police.
He further stated that the said incident clearly exposes the politician – police nexus, which also exists in Goa. He said that whenever a policeman is linked to a politician in power, he becomes bold and indifferent to the consequences of his illegal acts, knowing that the politician will salvage him from any crisis. “This policeman who shot the advocate in such a brazen manner must have enjoyed such patronage of a politician. He condemned the politician – police nexus and insisted that it should be broken down”, he said.
Demanding to know why policemen have to carry guns to the Courts, Gomes demanded to know whether the police officers apprehend that they will come across a law and order situation. He said that the government should forthwith issue directions to police officers to carry guns in public places and Courts when a law and order is not expected.
