PANJIM: Two boys aged 16 and 19, riding triple-seat on a two-wheeler, were killed while the rider sustained injuries after the bike rammed into a signboard near the British Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The bike rider Jesben Paul Sequeira (19) has been booked for ‘causing death by negligence’ and for ‘rash and negligent driving’.

According to the police, the incident occurred when the boys were proceeding from NIO Circle at Dona Paula through the road passing besides the British Cemetery at around 4.30pm. “The bike dashed against the sign board, located on the side of the road after which the accused rider and the pillion riders fell and as a result Riff Velho (16) and Sohail Shaikh (19), both from Caranzalem succumbed to injuries. The rider was shifted to Goa Medical College. We have booked a case against him,” PI Siddhant Shirodkar said.
Police officials at the site revealed that the rider was allegedly recklessly riding the bike and none of the three boys were wearing helmets.
A case under Sections 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC has been registered against the rider.
While wearing helmets on highways is compulsory, the government has often advised bike riders and pillion riders to wear helmets within the city limits. The Traffic Police have also begun a drive to identity riders without helmets and issue them challans.
