MARGAO: Taking serious note of the issue raised by the citizens, the Water Resource Department on Friday initiated the inspection of alleged illegal borewells in Cuncolim Industrial Estate and commenced necessary enforcement actions.
Nearly eight units located in the IDC were inspected by a team of officials led by Jaison Menezes, Executive Engineer of WRD Gogol-Margao.
Sources stated that legal action was initiated against the alleged illegal borewells to ensure compliance with water resource management regulations in Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
It is pertinent to note that citizens of Cuncolim have been vocal in urging action against the units in IDC for their alleged illegal borewells. Furthermore, concerns have been raised about industrial units purportedly releasing untreated effluents into these borewells, contributing to environmental pollution in the area.
In the past, the Goa State Pollution Control Board also conducted inspections in the area and identified several fish meal plants and fish processing units located in the IDC. During these inspections, they detected instances of untreated effluents being released into borewells.
Speaking to reporters, Menezes informed that their team has inspected approximately 8 units and a show cause notice has been issued to one unit for violation of the law.
“It has been brought to our notice that the other seven units have filed applications for the legalisation of their borewells,” Menezes stated.
He also informed that his office will continue to inspect all units in the Cuncolim IDC regarding borewells.
