MARGAO: National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO), Goa on Tuesday demanded 50 per cent reservation for women in the Assembly elections.

Addressing the media persons, here, Prof Joanne Rebello along with Royla Fernandes and Adv Seoula Vaz briefed about the “Women reservations at legislation through State Assembly”.
She claimed that more than two decades have passed since the “Women Reservation Bill 1996” has been presented at the Rajya Sabha but it has still not seen the light of the day since then. With the Assembly elections of various States at the doorstep it is high time for the women to wake up and fight for their right.
Women have touched the sky, may it be at the work field or any other public domain. Then why shouldn’t there be equal reservation in the field of politics, questioned Prof Joanne.
“We should see to it that women empowerment doesn’t remain as just a theoretical concept. Women should be made to represent well in the political domain as well,” she added.
Prof Joanne said that in the State Legislative Assembly there are only two women who come up to hardly around five per cent of the total. Women should come forward and raise their voice for their rights.
“Our objective is to identify and groom our women and push them forward and to make it happen at the earliest,” Prof Joanne said.
A member of the Women Empowerment Cell Royala Fernandes, who was also a former sarpanch of Benaulim, stressed on the harassment of women that is caused at every level in the Society.
“It is a basic need to introduce a woman in legislature,” she stated.
Highlighting various reasons why the reservation is required, Adv Seoula said a visible wage gap between a male and the female, less of the land assets with women as per designed laws, lack of money with women, sexual harassment on day to day basis, migration of women due to marriage, the disturbing allegations pushed on to women by the society forces women to stay back and not contest the elections.
“We will approach the various political parties and ask them to identify those capable women within the party and to distribute tickets to women for the upcoming Assembly elections” she added.
