Handcarts have made a mess of Vasco market: Carlos

Instructs MMC to rearrange handcarts, hawkers to facilitate free movement of emergency vehicles

VASCO: Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida has instructed the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to orderly relocate all the handcarts and hawkers to facilitate free movement of emergency and other important service vehicles, in the market area.
The instruction was issued following a joint inspection by Almeida, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik, councillors and municipal engineers, on Wednesday.
After the inspection, Almeida informed that the stationary carts as well as the hawkers at the municipality owned modern market have made a complete mess of the same. Therefore, he said, he has instructed to orderly relocate all the handcarts and hawkers.
“Presently, the stationary carts and hawkers in the modern market are not placed properly due to which there is congestion in the market. Thus, after the inspection, I have issued directions to MMC to survey all carts and hawkers and prepare a master plan in which all the carts and hawkers in the market can be placed in a systematic manner, so that emergency vehicles can have easy access in the market,” Almeida said.
MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said that due to rift between the hawkers and cart operators, the modern market “is in complete mess. Therefore, as directed by the MLA, we have taken a decision to relocate the carts and hawkers in different line and in systematic manner within 15 days. Presently, even a fire tender cannot enter into the modern market.”
“After streamlining the carts and hawkers, fire tenders will get easy access in market and the open space inside the market will be maintained without encroachment.”
