PONDA: The youth from Ponda on Saturday took out a rally from the town to the Kranti Maidan to protest the gang-rape of a 19-year-old girl in Hathras UP seeking justice for the victim and her family.
Ashit Verenkar said “It’s now 74 years since the nation attained freedom. We are now in 21st century but the atrocities and rapes have not stopped. Thousands of girls are raped each year but there is no fear among rapists due to the delay in justice. To stop the rape culture and injustice, the government should come out with a law to hang the rapists within 15 days.”
He said, “The Nirbhaya case took eight years to deliver justice to her family. Since it takes ages to deliver justice to the rape victims such incidents continue. We worry when our sisters don’t reach home before 7 pm. The government should provide a safe atmosphere for them in the country and deliver justice immediately.”
A young girl protesting at Kranti Maidan said, “Freedom is our right, we are pained to see that children and elderly women are raped. The government should just not talk about freedom but should create a safe environment for females to move alone and freely on streets just like men. The government should put an end to “rape culture” in country.”
Ashutosh Naik said, “What is use of freedom we got from the British. Our freedom fighters sacrificed their lives so that we could get justice. Our system should be such that the poorest of poor especially women who often face atrocities get justice.”
He said, “Mere social media posts will not provide justice to women. The girls and youth need to come out on streets and fight for justice.”
