CALANGUTE: A dance bar employee was apprehended while attempting to exchange counterfeit dollars at a local forex dealer’s shop in Calangute. The shop owner, Benny George, filed a complaint with Calangute police, recounting a previous visit from an individual accompanied by a woman on September 27.
According to George’s complaint, the duo approached his money exchange shop to exchange 300 US dollars. His wife, who was present in the shop, handed over Rs 24,350 in exchange for the dollars. However, upon later inspection, it was discovered that the bills were photocopies. Subsequently, George reviewed the CCTV footage and shared photos of the suspect with other money exchange dealers in Calangute.

On Thursday, the same individual returned to the shop with more dollars. Recognising him, George called the person inside the shop, closed the shutter, and confronted him. The individual identified himself as Rehan Sharif, presenting his Aadhar card. He admitted to working in a nightclub in Calangute and offered to return the counterfeit money.
As the person failed to return the money after purportedly calling a friend, George alerted the Calangute police, who took him into custody for further investigation.
Speaking to the media, George expressed suspicions about an
organised fake currency racket operating in Calangute. The individual claimed to have received the fake notes from Russian guests, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
