MAPUSA: New entrants Goan Football Club got their campaign off to a winning start by registering a 1-0 win over Sporting Clube de Goa in the GFA Vendanta Women’s League, at Duler Stadium, here on Monday.
Goan FC led 1-0 at the breather through Alisha Tavares’ goal.
The Goan FC eves started the match on a positive note and had they converted the chances they got the score-line would have been different.
In the 18th minute, Goan’s Joyvi Fernandes failed to get past the Sporting keeper Ashika Gadekar in a one-to-one situation.
Sporting who were pegged back had a decent chance in the first half in the 22nd minute but Stessi Cardozo’s free-kick was well saved by the Goan FC keeper Josline D`Souza.
The Goan FC eves finally managed to find the nets in the 25th minute when Alisha Tavares received a pass from Jeromina Colaco who directed the ball past the keeper into the far corner of the goal to give her side the lead.
Goan’s Alisha should have made it 2-0 five minutes later with only the keeper at her mercy but she shot wide.
Crossing over, Goan FC continued pressuring the Sporting citadel with International player Velaine Fernandes spraying passes to Namita and Alisha upfront but they failed to score.
Sporting almost made Goan eves to pay for the missed chances when in the 53rd minute a 30-yard free-kick by Stessi Cardozo spilled out of the hands of keeper Josline but striker Elida failed to tap the ball in with an open goal infront of her.
Goan FC’s Velaine Fernandes was rightly awarded the player-of-the-match.
