This year has forced change down everyone’s throat. The old ways will no longer work. Jobs have been lost by the tens of thousands and those who still have one are now multi-tasking.
However, there are scores of young people who have passed out of college and looking for jobs. Some are looking to study further but others are looking for jobs, jobs that just do not exist in this market. Another factor that may go against them is the absence of experience. So what are the young men and women who have stepped out into the harsh COVID 19 world doing?

Prashant Pai has just passed out of college and had briefly explored the idea of working in the private sector but then decided it would be better if he worked for himself. Having studied accounts and having a passionate interest in software he decided to explore the possibility of offering his services to small businesses in Goa. He said “Some of them are very small but it is a start I guess. My parents are not dependent on my earning so that pressure is not there. Once the market gets better I am sure these businesses will do better thus increasing my work and hopefully billings. I will have to learn more and keep myself updated but I am clear I don’t want to work for anyone”.
That desire to be one’s own boss was also a driver for Nazima Sheikh. She said “I have already started my business because I did not want to still idle. I started a food delivery business and it is a great feeling. I have priced it right and there is nothing priced over Rs 300. The response has been pretty good. My sister- in law, mother and I cook. We receive orders during the week and deliver over the weekend. Right now I don’t want to be working for anyone. This works for me because I intend to study further and then let’s see what happens. It has been a great experience and a very fulfilling one”.
This virus has resulted in many people entering the kitchen either for pleasure or business. Swizel Quadros said she had just answered her exams and had already set up her business. She said “I decided to start baking. I started in June and business has been pretty good. Once it settles down I intend to innovate”.
Sometimes it helps if one comes from a family which has been involved in business for a while. Anuja Joshi started her business as soon as she was done with college. She said “I was very clear that I would only do business because it would mean I could do my own thing and reach out to people. As a fresher, I have the energy and enthusiasm to do my own business. My father owns a showroom for over twenty-two years”. She started her business in bakery products made from home. The response she said was amazing.
Nolan Lobo a freelance photographer, videographer and designer. Having passed out of college, he has been following his passion from the time he was in the first year in junior college. He said I would prefer to be my own boss and am aiming to become a cinematographer. I was supposed to go to Mumbai to study but this virus put paid to my plans. If I go to Mumbai will freelance and learn and if need be work for someone to acquire new skills but at the end of the day I will be my own boss.” Clear focused undoubtedly.
The young today have vision and clarity and the drive to do what they want to do their own way.
