MARGAO: The proposed hike in the price of traditional pao and poie that was to be hiked to Rs 5 from October 10 has been withdrawn announced.
All Goa Bakers & Confectioners Association President Peter Fernandes, said the proposed price hike is postponed as leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat has extended his support to their issue and promised them that he will arrange a meeting with the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to find an amicable solution to their problems.
While pointing out that Digambar had constituted a committee headed by Dr Nandkumar Kamat to study the problems faced by bakers. Dr Nandkumar in his report had suggested certain steps to be taken by the government to alleviate their sufferings.
Fernandes now demanded that the government give financial support to traditional Goan bakers who have closed their bakeries and also allot plots to bakers in the industrial estates to start modern confectionary items.
Besides he also appealed to the government to find ways to get toddy tappers so that toddy is available for bakers to bake bread the traditional way without using yeast and also asked for subsidy to purchase two-wheelers, tricycles or small vehicles to sell their bakery products.
Meanwhile, Digambar Kamat thanked the All Goa Bakers & Confectioners Association for withdrawing their proposed bread price hike and said he had promised to take up the matter with the chief minister and also push for implementing of the Dr Nandkumar Kamat Task Force Committee report.
In his tweet Digambar said he has asked the bakers to maintain the quality of the traditional pao so that it is nutritious and maintains the credibility of Goan poder or baker.
