MURIDA-FATORDA: Hosts Loyola High School, Margao registered a solitary goal win over St Joseph’s High School, Bangalore to move into the next round of the Loyola Platinum Cup, at Don Bosco Oratory ground, Murida-Fatorda, on Tuesday.
Loyola coach Cajetan Noronha gave extra task to striker Rui Noronha to take control of the forward line as well as midfield and to shoot long rangers.
In the second minute itself, Rui Noronha took a long ranger which failed to pop up into the St Joseph’s net.
Three minutes later, Rui sent in a diagonal pass to Cybern Fernandes and without wasting time Cybern took a power-packed shot which crushed into St Joseph net.
St Joseph’s Puran Kumar’s shot missed the Loyola target by a whisker in the ninth minute. Thereafter, Rui Noronha’s header missed in the 34th minute.
In the second match, St. Vincent’s High School, Pune blanked St Mary’s High School, Mumbai 3-0. Man-of-the-match Kevin Chatterjee netted a brace while Bhargav Sawant also got his name on the scoresheet.
St. Britto High School, Mapusa suffered a 2-0 defeat to St Paul’s High School, Belgaum. Sinan S netted both the goals.
In the final match of the day, Loyola High School, Pune pipped St Stanislaus High School, Mumbai 1-0. Akshat Dadhoo scored the match-winner.
Nihar Apte was named man-of-the-match.
Earlier, Vijai Sardessai, MLA of Fatorda constituency declared the tournament open in the presence of Fr Basil Vago S.J, Amit D’Souza S.J., the coordinator of the tournament. The other dignitaries present on the dais were Adler D’Cruz( Secretary of Salgaocar), Fr. Kinley D’Cruz (Director of Don Bosco), Fr. William Rodrigues S.J. the rector of Loyola-Margao, Fr Simon De Melo S.J. (the vice-principal of Loyola High School-Margao), Savio Medeira (All India Football Federation-Director), Anthony Pango (VP of Goa Football Association), Jaju Fernandes- (executive member of Goa Football Association), Ignatius Dias (ex-India International player/Salgaocar Manager), Mickey Rebello (ex-Goa National player and present coach of GFDC) and other dignitaries.
