PANJIM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said the orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue till Wednesday morning.
“Monsoon has been active over Goa during the last 24 hours and in the present conditions, it is expected that the orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue for the next two days,” IMD said, adding, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at few places and extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over the entire State.”
Speaking to Herald, MET director ML Sahu said, “The red alert issued has been withdrawn but the orange alert continues till Wednesday morning with heavy to very heavy rainfall. The deficit is now come down to 16 per cent with the total seasonal rainfall reaching the 93-inch mark.”
“The reason for the removing the red alert was that the upper air cyclone had weakened suddenly over the Maharashtra-Konkan area,” Sahu said.
He further said that fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during the next 24 hours as winds will be westerly to south westerly with speeds of 45-50 kmph temporarily reaching 60 kmph in gusts/squall.
Since Saturday, rainfall played havoc in the State. The south-west monsoon normally withdraws from the coast by the end of September.
