PANJIM: Wilred Leisure were lucky to beat Sporting Club of Davorlim 2-1 in 25th All-Goa St Anne’s festival inter-village soccer tournament organized by Ponda Footballers at Animal Husbandry ground, Curti-Ponda, Tuesday.
Milagres Fernandes and Sertorio Monteiro scored for Wilred Leisure while Venson Figueiredo scored for Davorlim. Davorlim have to blame themselves for the defeat as their forwards missed umpteen opportunities in the first half.
In what turned out to be the best match of the tournament so far, the teams played attacking soccer with Davorlim totally dominating the first half while Wilred Leisure had the upper hand in the second half.
Davorlim were the first to attack when Rosfon Miranda essayed a through ball to Sandy, whose shot was punched out by keeper Custodio Piexoto. Later, Boney ballooned over from close range for Davorlim.
At the other end, Tony’s header was punched out by Davorlim goalkeeper Sachin. In the 15th minute, Davorlim scored when Vincent essayed a diagonal pass and Venson Figueiredo made no mistake in placing the ball over the advancing keeper.
Wilred Leisure nearly equalized but Milagres’ header was saved on the goal-line by defender Vincent Colaco.
In the first minute of the second half, Wilred Leisure nearly scored as Milagres Fernandes’ header was cleared by Jodrel Gomes on the goal-line with the goalkeeper already beaten. Then, Milagres scored off the next move as the defender misjudged the header and Milagres got a loose ball to score the equalizer.
Wilred Leisure almost scored another but the Davorlim keeper punched out a powerful header by Tony Dias. They continued to exert pressure and scored the all-important goal when Sertorio Monteiro headed in off a corner.
Davorlim nearly equalized as Sandy’s header off a corner nearly entered but the defender headed the ball out.
Wilred Leisure goalkeeper Custodio Piexoto was declared man-of-the-match and received the prize from ex-principal Luis Fernandes.
Wilred Leisure will now meet the winners of the match between Parish Youth Nuvem and Nerul Sports Club on July 16.
