BICHOLIM: A scam amounting to Rs 1.5 crore has been unearthed in the Sanquelim branch of Maharashtra Vikas Sewa Society.
The accountant, manager and peon of the Society have been booked for the offence.
The scam was unearthed following a complaint lodged with the police by the depositors of the Society that they feared losing their deposits due to the actions of the trio.
According to Bicholim police, the Society has around 200 depositors in Sanquelim and Bicholim.
While the peon Sandesh Dicholkar has been arrested, the manager and the accountant have applied for anticipatory bail.
Bicholim PI Sanjay Dalvi informed that another scam in the Society came to light during an audit which found cash difference of Rs 33 lakh.
PI Dalvi said that trio used to mortgage gold ornaments mortgaged to the Society, in other banks to avail gold loans.
He informed that police have recovered golden ornaments of 31 customers mortgaged by the peon in different banks.
PSI Kishore Ramanad is investigating the case under the guidance of PI Dalvi.
