It has been long one horrendous month when I happened to be aiding the patient to recover from the sordid road accident. It is my second stint to experience of how much Goa’s only lifeline is coping in handling the accidental cases at GMC. The war-footing exercise that the doctors and nurses undertake at GMC’s casualty is amazing. The night I happened to be there of October 17 turned out to be the nightmare of my life when I witnessed the number of road accidents on a single night from all across Goa. The accident victims were referred to the GMC at middle of the night. In this particular case, a businessman’s son alleged to be drunk while driving rammed into the motorbike and had the victim left fighting for his life by the roadside near the Hospicio Hospital. If not for his friends’ timely help in shifting him to the GMC he would not have seen the light of the day.
But I am simply amazed to see the casualty ward at work be it day or night time who attend to the patients. Hats off to the staff for their wonderful efforts to save the traumatized victims. But once the patient is shifted into the respective ward the agony and plight of the near and dear ones is unimaginable. All seems to be going well as long as the victim is in good shape. But once the victim shows signs of despair the loved ones raise an alarm and just are at God’s mercy.
The old wing of the GMC is crying for attention in all respects. Though the cleaning has been outsourced many more grey areas deserves urgent attention from the authorities to keep check on the environment.
The mad rush to the GMC should be checked and prevented. The patients are rushed to GMC hospital from far-flung area including the neighboring states that avail free medical services at the cost of the Goans. This should be double checked and prevented on war-footing so that the Goans have access to the hospital.
I saw a family of seven definitely not from Goa squatting in the middle of the gangway outside the upper operation theater; I requested them to please go and squat sideways and not to block the way and they obliged. For how long Goans will be generous to outsiders to provide them free medical aid?
