PANJIM: The State government’s proposal to ban glass bottles on beaches has been hailed by stakeholders who, however, want the move fine tuned.
At a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar last month, following deaths of tourists who ventured into waters during the late hours and reportedly under inebriated conditions, the authorities were instructed to act tough against those found drinking from glass bottles.
Shack operators, who were urged to assist the department, have welcomed the decision but claim to have encountered some hurdles.
“We will advise tourists not to carry glass bottles onto the beaches and ensure drinking in glass bottles is within the shacks. But there are difficulties even for liquor wholesalers. The government should give time to alcohol manufacturers to supply beverages in cans that would easily replace glass bottles,” shack owner Cruz Cardozo said.
Shack operators have nevertheless pledged to support the government’s mission.
